Builder Mardiros Demerchyan accused of stealing cable at Olympic construction site

Builder Mardiros Demerchyan is accused of stealing a cable from the Olympic construction site in Sochi. The accused man signed a recognizance not to leave.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mardiros Demerchyan was summoned for questioning to the Adler OVD (Interior Division) in connection with the theft of a cable at the construction of a house for Olympic volunteers, which occurred in 2013.

Demerchyan, a builder of the objects of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, was accused of a false denunciation of policemen. He refused to plead guilty. On December 17, 2014, the Adler District Court of Sochi sentenced Demerchyan to public works.

According to investigator, the theft occurred in May 2013. The investigator has reported that an electric cable worth more than 50,000 roubles was stolen in the residential block for Olympic volunteers under construction in the village of Veseloe.

The territory, on which the residential block for volunteers was under construction, was guarded by private guard company "Bars". According to the investigator, the question of guards' responsibility will be examined in the course of the investigation.

Alexander Boichenko, an advocate of Mardiros Demerchyan, has declared his intention to appeal to investigators with the request to question everyone who might be involved in the theft. According to Alexander Boichenko, the Mardiros Demerchyan's defence "has got a lot of questions to the investigators." "Meanwhile, the main question is why it is only Demerchyan who is suspected of theft, while there are a lot of persons, who could commit the crime. Although, there is no evidence other than ungrounded accusations," the advocate has said.
