Prizes for protection of human rights, freedom of speech awarded in Azerbaijan

The Institute of Peace and Democracy has awarded prizes for 2003 in the field of protection of human rights and freedom of speech in Azerbaijan. The award ceremony was conducted on May 12. The prizes were presented in two nominations: to an organization and to a media organization.

Human Rights Watch, an international human rights organization, and its employee Peter Burkhard (the author of the report on human rights violations in the course of the October 2003 developments) won the prize among organizations.

The Turan agency, headed by Mekhman Aliyev, was given the prize as a media organization for consistency in the field of protection of freedom of speech and democracy.
