Opposition leaders stand trial in Baku

A preliminary hearing in the case of several opposition leaders arrested on the grounds of their implication in mass disorders in October 2003 is to take place at the Court for Grave Crimes in Baku on May 7.

Those who will stand trial are deputy chairmen of the Musavat party Arif Gadjily, Ibragim Ibragimli and Rauf Arifoglu (the latter is editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper Yeni Musavat), secretary general of the Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu, leaders of the People's Party and Umid (Hope) party Panakh Guseynov and Igbal Agazade, and chairman of the Karabakh Veterans Association Etimad Asadov.

Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Zakir Garalov has promised that the trial will be fair and open.
