New detentions of opposition activists in Adjarian autonomy

Seven activists of the political movement Our Adjaria were detained by local law enforcers in the village of Gonio on the territory of Georgia's Adjarian autonomy on April 20.

According to the police, the pretext for the detention was to check the members of the organization, which is in opposition to the present leadership of the autonomy, whether they were drug takers, head of the movement's press service Gela Vasadze told Novosti-Gruzia.

All the detained men have been released.

Mr Vasadze considered the incident a new attempt by the Adjarian leadership to put pressure on the Our Adjaria movement.

"The Adjarian authorities continue their policy of frightening and intimidating dissenters, continue to persecute opposition activists. But by their actions, they only prolong the agony of the regime that has established in the autonomy," Mr Vasadze said.
