Former defense minister arrested in Armenia

A trial court gave sanction to 2-month pre-trial detention of former defense minister Lieutenant-General Vagarshak Arutyunian. He is charged with making appeals to overthrow the power by force.

Vagarshak Arutyunian was detained in an office of the opposition party Anrapetutiun (Republic) on the night of April 12-13, after the dispersal of an opposition meeting. Party leader Aram Sarkisian told journalists on April 15 that the authorities "invented an absurd accusation for Vagarshak Arutyunian."
