Lukin declares for post of ombudsman in Chechnya

Vladimir Lukin, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, suggested that the post of ombudsman be introduced in Chechnya.

"The human rights monitoring in Chechnya must be carried out by an ombudsman in Chechnya. That is why the post of human rights envoy should be introduced there as soon as possible," Vladimir Lukin said at a press conference on March 25.

In his opinion, this ombudsman could monitor the situation in Chechnya from the inside without political bias.

According to the law, entities of the Russian Federation can, but are not obliged to, create the position of ombudsman in their territory.
