Striking miners’ negotiations with the management in Georgia did not result in a consensus

The miners and company owners who are on a strike in Chiatura found no consensus with the management. The workers demand for higher wages declaring that the company is really able to do it. Representatives of the management of the mines state that the workers’ demands are unrealizable.

Since 2007 manganese exploitations in Chiatura belong to “Georgian Manganese” holding, a subsidiary company of “Stemcor” British holding. The main demand of the striking miners is a 100% increase of today’s rates. The miners demand to raise safety standards and improve working conditions. Representatives of the management declared impossibility to grant the strikers’ demands.

Georgy Kvirikashvili, nominee for the office of the Minister of Economy, who was present at the negotiations declared on October, 24, that an agreement was achieved according to which a supervisory inspectorate subordinate to the Ministry of Economy would assume responsibility for safety techniques at the enterprise, “Business Georgia” reports.

The management of the mining company cannot yet clarify the amount of damage inflicted on the mine as a result of the ten-day strike, “Echo of the Caucasus” reports.
