Georgia: prisoners of Ksani colony complain about torture and humiliating treatment

Today, inmates of the Ksani colony No. 15, one more Georgian penitentiary institution, announced that they had been beaten and tortured.

"One of prisoners died because of humiliating treatment"

Today, several persons, who serve their sentences in the Ksani colony, telephoned to the "9 Arkhi" Tbilisi TV Company and said that "in recent months and years, in the colony, many prisoners were beaten and abused."

According to the victims, one of the prisoners died because of humiliating treatment. They appealed to the public "to examine the situation in the colony and to bring to responsibility officials, involved in the torture and abuse," the "ITAR-TASS" reports.

According to the prisoners, in some cases, they were tortured by electric current, the "Echo of Moscow" reports.

After the publication of the information, the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance has stated that at present, the Ksani colony No. 15 employs no personnel, reproved of ill-treatment of prisoners, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.

"Parents of prisoners go on hunger strike"

Today, in their turn, staff members of the Office of the Georgian Ombudsman confirmed the facts of hunger strike of inmates of a number of penitentiary institutions. According to the Office of the Georgian Ombudsman, in recent days, inmates of the Gldani prison No. 8, the Batumi prison No. 3, the Rustavi colony No. 6 and No. 17, and the Ksani colony No. 15 went on a hunger strike.

"In all penitentiary institutions, prisoners spoke of the important facts of improper treatment and handed in collective statements-complaints to representatives of the Ombudsman to be responded to," the website "Georgia-Online" quotes the statement of the Office of the Georgian Ombudsman as reporting.

Today, parents of prisoners, who gathered in front of the Rustavi prison No. 6, also went on a hunger strike.

According to the journalist and writer Lali Moroshkina, one of the mothers, her son was handcuffed to his bed. The parents will be on the hunger strike till they visit their children. They demand to provide Lali Moroshkina with the opportunity to visit the prison and get the real information about the situation, the website "News.ge" reports.

Till present, the number of hunger strikers in front of the Rustavi prison has not been reported.
