North-Ossetian communists condemn demolition of Lenin monument in Mozdok

On August 24, at a rally in the city of Mozdok, members of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) demanded to condemn unsanctioned demolition of the Lenin monument, committed on August 23, as an act of vandalism.

On August 23, at about 6:00 a.m., in Mozdok, in Square of the 50th anniversary of October, the monument to Vladimir Lenin was removed from its pedestal. The statue was presumably removed by a truck.

The leaders the North Ossetian communists have assured that the destroyed monument will be restored in the nearest future.

Officials from the Republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have stressed that the event has no political background and is an ordinary act of hooliganism. Criminals are to be identified, the "North-Caucasian News" reports.

At present, officers of the criminal investigation department together with the GIBDD (traffic police) detained a local resident, who had earlier criminal record. While being in a state of alcoholic intoxication, he committed an act of vandalism on a KAMAZ truck. The investigation is underway, the website of the MIA in North Ossetia reports.
