Georgia: heavy rain floods streets in Rustavi

On August 20, in the Georgian city of Rustavi, region of Kvemo-Kartli, heavy rains, accompanied by gusty wind, led to flooding of streets and house basements. Fortunately, nobody was killed or wounded.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Nini Kordzaya, the head of the press service of the Rustavi Mayoralty, since morning the city holds renovation and restoration works. Special services are pumping water away from city streets.

According to her story, several streets, mainly in the new part of the city, were flooded.

"Also, the roof was torn away from a residential apartment block in the 7th micro-district; and windows were broken in an adjacent block under construction. Repairs are on since morning. The wind and torrential rain had caused a several-hour-long electricity outage, but now its supply has been restored," said Ms Kordzaya.

David Kirkitadze, Governor of Kvemo-Kartli, has promised that people will be able to return to their homes within a week.

"I live in the 12th micro-district; it was heavily flooded. Our basement was full of water; cars were half in water. But this morning, the water was pumped out," said Giorgi, a resident of Rustavi.

"I was on my way home, when the rain started. Later, there was hail; and I barely had time to run into the entrance. At home we did not suffer, but electricity was out for a few hours," said Mari, a city resident.
