Sergey Mkrtchyan: Armenia has never won silver Olympic medals since 1996

At the 30th Olympic Games, the Armenian national team with one silver and two bronze medals occupies the 60th place at the informal medal standings. According to Sergey Mkrtchyan, a sports commentator, that place represents a progress, taking into account the fact that since 1996, Armenia won no silver medals.

Arthur Aleksanyan from Armenia, European Champion of 2012, won a bronze medal at the Olympic competitions on Greco-Roman wrestling in the weight category of up to 96 kg. Arsen Djulfalakyan won the silver Olympic medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the weight category of up to 74 kg. Ripsime Khurshudyan won for the country the bronze Olympic medal at the competitions in weightlifting in the weight category of over 75 kg.

With those three medals, Armenia shared the 60th place (and the Olympic Games were attended by athletes from more than 200 countries) with such countries as Belgium and Finland.

Commenting on the results of the Olympic Games, Sergey Mkrtchyan, the sports commentator, said that, despite the lower in comparison with Beijing Olympic Games number of medals, won by the Armenian athletes in London, Armenia had a progress in the informal medal standings by 20 points, and that fact certainly represented a big step forward.

Characterizing the performance of the Armenian athletes, the sports commentator has noted that the performance of the judokas was expected and they, in fact, competed "in their strength". And characterizing the track and field athletes, Sergey Mkrtchyan has noted that the receipt of four Olympic licenses already was a big step forward for the national track and field athletes, while at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing, the Armenian track and field athletes won only one Olympic license.

Sergey Mkrtchyan named the performance of Arman Yeremyan, an Armenian taekwondo athlete, a pleasant surprise.
