Second Azerbaijani boxer wins bronze Olympic medal

Today at night, the Azerbaijani boxer Magomedrasul Medzhidov has lost – in the weight category of over 91 kg – his semi-final fight at the Olympic Games in London to Italian Roberto Cammarelle and lost a chance to compete for the gold medal. Medzhidov received a bronze medal.

In his fight with Cammarelle, Medzhidov won the first round 6:4 and lost the second one with the same score. In the final third round Cammarelle was stronger – 3:2. The final score was 13:12 in favour of Cammarelle who proceeded to the final.

Medzhidov expressed his disagreement to referees; and quite possible that the Azerbaijani delegation will submit an appeal.

In the 1/4 final Medzhidov fought with the Russia's Magomed Omarov. The fight the two natives of Dagestan ended at 17:14 in favour of Medzhidov.

In the 1/8 final, the Azerbaijani boxer has an easy victory over Meji Mwanba from the Democratic Republic of Congo with the score of 8:1; his opponent is in the middle of the second round was unable to continue the fight.

The 25-year-old Medzhidov stands for the national team of Azerbaijan since 2009. In 2011 he became world champion.

On August 10, in the weight category of up to 91 kg another Azerbaijani boxer Teymur Mamedov lost to the Italian Clemente Russo and was awarded a bronze medal. Mamedov said that he disagreed with the decision of referees, as the victory, in his opinion, was wrongly given to his opponent.

However, the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) has rejected an appeal of the Azerbaijani national team coaching staff and upheld the result of a fight 15:13 in favour of Russo (2:3, 4:6 and 9:4 by rounds).

Mamedov and Medzhidov brought the number of Azerbaijani Olympic medals to seven.
