15 convicts pardoned in South Ossetia

In accordance with the decision of the Parliament of South Ossetia on amnesty in connection with the election of a new president, 15 persons, including three citizens of Georgia, have been already released, and 8 other prisoners faced reduction of the period of their sentences. This was announced by Sergey Bitiev, First Deputy General Prosecutor of South Ossetia.

There are three citizens of Georgia Shota Makharashvili, Georgy Mairamidze, and Otar Djovakhi among the released prisoners; on July 20, they were handed over to the Georgian authorities as a sign of goodwill. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Sergey Bitiev.

"8 citizens of South Ossetia, convicted by the courts of our republic, are among those who, in accordance with the decision of Parliament on amnesty, will face reduction of the period of their sentences. One of them serves his sentence for committing a theft, the other for participating in the group's escape, and the rest for committing murders," Sergey Bitiev has added.

In accordance with the decision of the Republic's Parliament, a non-served part of sentence of prisoners, sentenced for imprisonment term of up to 10 years inclusively, shall be reduced by one-third.
