Chechnya: militia officer and two supposed militants killed in skirmish

In the southeast of Chechnya, in the foothill Shali District, a militia officer perished attempting to detain unknown persons. Another militiaman was wounded. Two suspected militants, already identified, were liquidated.

A source in law enforcement bodies of Chechnya reported: "On May 28, employees of the Shali ROVD (District Interior Unit) and Division 'R' of the 'Terek' Special-Purpose Detachment of Russia's MIA for the Southern Federal District held their operative-search actions in Shali, checking information on whereabouts of potential members of IAFs (illegal armed formations). During these actions in the crossing of Kadyrova and Ivanovskaya Streets, in front of the building of the City House of Culture, militiamen blocked a car with two suspected militants. When offered to surrender, the bandits opened fire on militiamen. In the course of the skirmish, both militants were liquidated. Also, Timur Musaev, head of the division for criminal investigation of Shali ROVD was lost. Another militiaman was wounded and hospitalized."

The source further asserted that "the car of the liquidated bandits was stuffed with two Makarov pistols with several magazines to them, three self-made grenades, called 'khattabkas', explosive, electrical detonators for land mines and about ten mobile telephones. The liquidated bandits have been identified. They are: Yusub Askhabov, 29, a resident of Shali, and Aslan Makaev, 26, a resident of Grozny. Both of them were active IAF members."
