Georgian Ombudsperson tells about Mziya Amaglobeli’s health condition

Mziya Amaglobeli, a journalist, who has been on her hunger strike for the third week, feels satisfactory, her condition is monitored by doctors. More than 300 Georgian journalists have signed a letter in Mziya’s support.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Amaglobeli declared a hunger strike in protest against her criminal prosecution and arrest. The court refused to consider the complaint against her arrest.

The journalist's health condition, although she has been on hunger strike for more than two weeks and receives only water, is satisfactory, said Levan Ioseliani, the Georgian Ombudsperson, adding that Mziya had no plans to end her hunger strike.

The Ombudsperson has also reported that within the past two months, his representatives had visited 401 citizens detained during protests, including 15 women and two minors who are kept at the temporary detention facilities in Georgia.

"241 detainees reported violence from law enforcers; 163 detainees had visible bodily injuries," the Ombudsperson's website has informed.

On January 27, Rezo Kiknadze and Nikoloz Djavakhishvili, the activists, who went on a hunger strike in solidarity with Amaglobeli, were forced to stop it. According to Gudji Avsadjanishvili, an advocate, the Djavakhishvili's health condition is alarming.

"Yesterday, he had two heart attacks, but no one paid attention to him. As a result ... his health was such that he was forced to stop his hunger strike," the advocate has stated.

Media professionals have demanded to immediately release Mziya Amaglobeli. They called on the international organizations protecting journalists’ rights, and diplomatic corps of friendly countries to speak out against the mass persecutions of journalists in Georgia.

Tamta Mikeladze, Director of the NGO "Center for Social Justice", has stated that "the struggle of journalists for the release of Mziya Amaglobeli gives strength."
