Russian Joint Staff reports that Georgia planned mass invasion into Abkhazia

On August 13, General-Colonel Anatoly Nogovitsyn, Deputy Commander of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, reported that Georgia had intended to invade Abkhazia.

We remind you that on August 12 Abkhazia finished its operation of forcing Georgian troops out of the upper section of Kodori Gorge.

According to Anatoly Nogovitsyn's statement, a seized map of the Georgian operation in Abkhazia presents details of the invasion plan of Georgian troops in direction of Sukhumi. "Georgia has concentrated up to one and a half brigades in the Gali direction to bypass the units of our peacekeepers, and up to 4 battalions targeted at Sukhumi. They also planned to cut off any help to Abkhazia from Russia. A powerful grouping was deployed," said Anatoly Nogovitsin.

According to the Joint Staff commander, Georgia had also planned an attack from the sea. "Russia's actions in the marine area; and our commitment to escalate and strengthen the peacekeeping grouping have brought the plan to a failure," the General-Colonel has noted.

Mr Nogovitsyn has treated the plan of Georgian militaries as "Tskhinvali-2", but in a much more serious version, the ITAR-TASS reports.
