In his turn, the EU High Commissioner said that he was for the first, but hopefully not for the last, time in Abkhazia and hoped for fruitful debates of all the accumulated problems.

"We had a wonderful dialogue. I presented the position of the European Union on settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. The EU is interested in the progress of the situation in the conflict zone. We wish to help in settling it," Javier Solana told journalists in the briefing after the end of his meeting with the president of Abkhazia.

Touching on the prospects of settling the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, the EU representative has declared that he saw no solution without participation of Russia. At the same time the diplomat has emphasized that, in the end, the settling of the conflict depends on the parties thereof.
