General Prosecutor's Office forbids journalist Agyl Khalil to leave Azerbaijan

Today, the Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office has made a statement asserting an attempt of journalist Agyl Khalil to go out of the country as evasion from investigation. The information that he was twice attacked in recent weeks was treated by prosecutors as ungrounded.

In his turn, Elchin Sadygov, the journalist's advocate, told in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he finds the ban on Agyl Khalil, who is the suffered party, to go outside the country to be illegitimate.

Azer Ahmedov, director of the "Azadlyg" newspaper, has treated the ban as "absurdity". According to his version, Agyl Khalil is a victim, not a suspect. He is not under recognizance not to leave, and any claims against him on this occasion have no legal grounds.

In Mr Ahmedov 's opinion, this prohibition is illegal and contradictory not only to national legislation, but also to the European Convention on Human Rights. In this connection, Agyl Khalil and his advocates are going to submit a judicial claim, Azer Ahmedov said.

Let us note here that the frontier guards of the airport prohibited Agyl Khalil from leaving the country, referring to the ban imposed by the General Prosecutor's Office.
