Human rights defender complains about not being allowed to visit Nagavkin in penal colony
The chief of the penal colony in Uryupinsk did not allow human rights defender Valentin Bogdan, who defends his colleague, to visit Igor Nagavkin. Valentin Bogdan called the actions of the penal colony chief unlawful and lodged a complaint with the prosecutor’s office.
The Uryupinsk City Court denied Valentin Bogdan the right to defend Igor Nagavkin, who is serving his two-year sentence in the penal colony.
Relatives of Igor Nagavkin say he lost a lot of weight because he had been on a hunger strike for a long time while in a punishment cell.
The Criminal Executive Code of the Russian Federation guarantees the right of prisoners to legal assistance from both advocates and other persons entitled to provide such assistance, emphasizes lawyer Sergey Ivaschenko.
“This article grants convicts the right to be visited not only by advocates, but also by other persons providing them with legal assistance ... Valentin Bogdan has every right to visit Igor Nagavkin in the penal colony,” Sergey Ivaschenko explained.
