Zhuravel appeals against verdict in his treason case
The Sochi Court of Appeal has scheduled a hearing on the appeal complaint against Nikita Zhuravel's verdict in the treason case for February 18, 2025, the BFM (Russian Business FM News) has reported.
The voluntary nature of Zhuravel's testimonies about his treason remains in question, but the closed court session prevents from hearing his statements, human rights defenders have noted. On November 25, 2024, Zhuravel was sentenced to 13.5 years in penal colony.
Let us remind you that on February 27, 2024, a court in Grozny sentenced Nikita Zhuravel to 3.5 years in prison, finding him guilty of violating the right to religion and hooliganism for his burning down the Koran. On October 3, 2024, the Russian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) announced the initiation of a new case against Zhuravel – this time on treason. According to investigators, he offered cooperation to an agent of Ukrainian security services and sent him a video of a train carrying Russian military equipment.
