European Union demands release of journalists arrested in Azerbaijan

In the course of the visit to Azerbaijan of Peter Semneby, EU's Special Representative for South Caucasus, the issue of releasing convicted journalists was specifically raised. "Journalists should not be imprisoned for their professional activity," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent quotes Peter Semneby's statement at today's press conference in the capital of Azerbaijan.

The Special Representative has informed that on the outcomes of his visit the EU's Mission has drawn up recommendations assuming the necessity to cancel the criminal liability for slander. Brussels is ready to assist in implementing programs on improving the level and professionalism of the press. It is also necessary to ensure the supremacy of the law and independence of the courts.
