Meeting of protest against ammoniac terminal construction was held in Taman

On August 31, 2003, in the village of Taman, the Social and Ecological Union of the West Caucasus, the Atshi Movement and local public organizations held a meeting of protest against the construction of ammoniac terminal on the Taman peninsula by the Togliattiazot corporation. Several activists of the Autonomous Action Movement also took part in the meeting.

The ban placed on the meeting by the Temryuk region's Administration and the threat to break up the meeting with the help of the police and the Federal Security Service forced the organizers of the meeting to take some actions. The TV shooting crew had been informed about the possible meeting break up and arrived beforehand. A great number of policemen and "people in mufti" was drifting about the square but did nothing to stop the meeting.

Nevertheless, some repressions did follow. The Co-Chairman of the Social and Ecological Union of the West Caucasus Andrey Rudomakha was charged with organization of an illegal meeting.

The meeting lasted for more than an hour. All the speakers said a resolute 'No!' to the ammoniac terminal. They also stressed that the construction of the petrochemical port "Zhelezny Rog" on the Taman land was inadmissible.
