US Congress voices against Olympiad-2014 in Sochi

On Friday, September 19, a resolution was brought to the US Congress with an appeal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to urgently revise its decision to hold Winter Olympic Games of 2014 in Russia and find another place for this Olympiad.

In was a month ago that the initiators of the bill reported their intention to move in an appeal to the IOC on cancellation of the Olympiad-2014 in Sochi as a punishment of Moscow for military actions in Georgia. In August, congressmen stated: "We support Georgia, our friend and ally, and we call IOC to appoint a new place for holding the Olympiad."

"The IOC would have never elected Sochi as the hosting city of 2014 Winter Olympic Games, if its members could have expected that Russia would invade Georgia. The IOC should take immediate steps to appoint a new hosting city for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games," runs the draft resolution.

The RIA "Novosti" reports that the text of the resolution that arrived yesterday for further consideration and voting to the foreign committee of the House of Representatives, also runs that "the US Congress believes that refusal of the government of the Russian Federation to respect sovereignty and territorial borders of its neighbours has made this country unacceptable as the organizer of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games."
