Moscow Helsinki Group will observe presidential and parliamentary elections in Chechnya

The Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) will observe the presidential and parliamentary elections in Chechnya that will be held on October 5, 2003. MHG Chairwoman Lyudmila Alekseyeva announced it talking with journalists. According to the words of Alekseyeva, the MHG arranges the getting of observers, their training and conveying to Chechnya. Representatives of various public organizations, including youth movements, will appear as observers. More than 300 polling stations in total will be organized in Chechnya.

Lyudmila Alekseyeva said that the MHG did not intend to officially invite foreigners for cooperation because of the risk of their abduction and would not engage people who is younger that 21 as well. The MHG chairwoman enlisted the support of the head of the Commission on Human Rights under the President of Russia Ella Panfilova, who promised requisite help.

"We do not expect that the Central Election Commission will avoid the results of the election if the human rights movement declares them invalid. But we will prepare a report, in which we will honestly tell everything", said Lyudmila Alekseyeva.
