Draft law "On Education" adopted in first reading in Azerbaijan

Yesterday, on December 28, the Azeri parliament adopted in the first reading the draft law "On Education". However, despite this fact, Milli Medzhlis has failed to withdraw from the draft law the provision prohibiting the wearing of headscarves at educational establishments. The draft law second reading is expected during the autumn session of 2008.

In the course of discussions of the draft law, Speaker Oktai Asadov stated that the prohibition to wear headscarves at educational establishments may not be put into the law "On Education." He noted that such decisions may only be adopted by the higher educational establishments themselves.
