Association of Abkhazian Women demands ensuring women's rights legislatively

The problems of family violence were discussed at the roundtable held by the Association of Abkhazian Women (AAW) under the UN action "16 days of active actions against violence on women". The participants of the roundtable were representatives of different NGOs, journalists, and Valerie Mogis, the officer of the Sukhumi UN Office in charge of human rights issues.

"We couldn't even assume that this problem can be so hot in Abkhazia. The war and complexities of the post-war life have provoked a splash of violence," Liudmila Dzhindzhal, project coordinator has emphasized in her turn.

Let us note here that the problem was studied under the Project "Home Violence Knowledge Dissemination", supported by the Swiss Development Agency.

In the opinion of the AAW members, it is necessary to make changes and additions to the valid regulatory and legal acts or to pass special laws to ensure the real observance of women's rights and protection against family and domestic violence.

Should the programme be supported by donors, the AAW plans to hold a series of seminars for employees of law enforcement bodies and the women who suffered from domestic violence.

The AAW also finds it necessary to set up a special Centre of Psychological Support of Women, where the people in need of legal and psychological help could address.

The Association of Abkhazian Women is a nongovernmental organization headed by Natella Akaba.
