Azerbaijani human rights activists expect pardon to convicted journalists
In Azerbaijan, human rights activists do not exclude that a new pardon decree will be passed. Thus, human rights activist Chingiz Ganizade told in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that in the near future a pardon decree will be passed in Azerbaijan and cover, in particular, the convicted journalists.
Ombudswoman Elmira Suleimanova has also addressed the country's leader with an appeal to pardon the journalists. In her appeal she asked President Ilham Aliev, by referencing December 10, the International Day of Human Rights, December 21, the Kurban Bayram, and December 31, the Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis of the World and New Year, to pass a pardon act in relation to elderly and heavily sick inmates, women and journalists.
"By doing this step you will bring happiness not only to those pardoned, but also to their relatives and friends. At the same time, this step will show to the whole world the adherence of Azerbaijan, governed by you, to the principles of democracy and defence of human rights and freedoms," runs the Ombudswoman's appeal.
However, Mekhman Aliev, director of the "Turan" News Agency, thinks that the journalists will not be pardoned.
We note here that currently 10 journalists are serving their terms in the prisons of Azerbaijan.
