Colony bosses refuse to inform Nagavkin's sister about his health condition

Igor Nagavkin, a human rights defender, was not released from the dungeon (punishment cell), although his second consecutive placement there has expired. The colony administration in the town of Uryupinsk has refused to inform Igor's sister about his health condition.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nagavkin had complained about convicts' custody conditions at the settlement penal colony located in the Volgograd Region, where he is serving his sentence, and demanded an inspection. On November 19, it became known that Nagavkin was placed into the dungeon, where he declared a hunger strike. Human rights defenders sent a request about the legality of the actions of colony bosses in relation to Nagavkin. After that, they extended Nagavkin's term in the dungeon, treating him as a malicious violator; they are preparing documents for his transfer to a general regime colony.

Natalia Shishlina, Igor's sister, was outraged when a colony employee refused to tell her about her brother's health condition and said only that he was "on the bed regime."

Valentin Bogdan, the Acting Chairman of the Fund "In Defence of Prisoners' Rights"*, has stated that "the bed regime" in the conditions of the dungeon "is actually good for him."

"In the morning, the bed in the cell is raised, like in a train car. And inmates can't lie down all the day. They have to eat either walking around the cell or sitting on the nightstand. The "bed regime" assumes that an inmate can lie down all the day. This, of course, is good for him," Mr Bogdan has explained.

On June 26, 2024, Nagavkin was found guilty of disrupting the work of the SIZO (pre-trial prison) in the town of Leninsk. The regional court, on the prosecutor's complaint, replaced his conditional two-year term for the real custody. In October, before going to the colony, Nagavkin pointed out in his complaint violations in his case and demanded to overturn his verdict.
