Kabardino-Balkarian Minister of Resorts comments on dress code for tourists

The introduction of a dress code for tourists in Kabardino-Balkaria is a forced measure. Such recommendations had to be issued after local residents saw two topless young women sunbathing on a bank of a river.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in the republics of Northern Caucasus, including Kabardino-Balkaria, the issue of introducing a dress code for tourists, whose behaviour and style of clothing, in the opinion of local residents, violate the traditions of the Caucasus, has been repeatedly raised. In July, the Kabardino-Balkarian Ministry of Resorts announced that tourists should not wear excessively short skirts, short shorts, and dresses with deep necklines. Residents of Kabardino-Balkaria were surprised by the recommendations. They believe the authorities should be better concerned about the poor condition of tourist sites and the problem with spontaneous dumps.

Acting Minister of Resorts and Tourism of Kabardino-Balkaria Murat Shogentsukov commented on the statement issued by his ministry in July concerning the introduction of a dress code for vacationers, the “Turdom” portal reports. Murat Shogentsukov called the introduction of the dress code “a forced measure.” The Minister explained that such recommendations had to be issued after “two nymphs” sunbathed topless on a river bank, and local residents saw them.

Murat Shogentsukov has also added that Kabardino-Balkaria is “a secular republic, where the everyday life is free and easy, and there are no strict restrictions.” The Minister of Resorts has stated he personally guarantee that tourists are not in any danger in the republic.

Let us remind you that residents of Karachay-Cherkessia and Dagestan also expressed their complaints about tourists for their appearance. In 2023, the Ministry of Tourism of Dagestan issued a memorandum for guests, recommending them to wear “modest” clothing and follow local rules of conduct.
