Action in support of journalist Gadjiev arises interest from Makhachkala residents

A solo picket held by journalist Magomed Magomedov in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev has attracted increased attention from passers-by in Makhachkala.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that colleagues of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), consider his criminal case to be political persecution and regularly hold solo pickets in his support in Makhachkala.

Today, such solo picket has been held by Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Chernovik”. “People came up, greeted me, and expressed their words of support. A little girl gave me a pen as a sign of her support. One of the passers-by showed that he was aware of the news and wished me good luck, hoping that we would soon be happy about the release of Abdulmumin. In addition, there was a support group, including journalists and an Abdulmumin’s father,” Magomed Magomedov said.

On September 12, 2023, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the “Ansar” charitable foundation, and entrepreneur Kemal Tambiev were sentenced to 17, 18, and 17.5 years of imprisonment, respectively. On October 23, a public prosecutor proposed to mitigate the sentences of the convicts and drop the charges related to the events of 2009-2014.

The public prosecutor’s proposal is related to the expiration of the statute of limitations, explains Ashot Norvardyan, an advocate of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. “For grave crimes, the statute of limitations is 10 years. And those episodes ended in May 2014. Thus, in May of this year, the statute of limitations expired,” the advocate stated.

Ashot Norvardyan noted that the episodes of 2009-2014 were not related to the financing of terrorist organizations, but to participation in such organizations.

The advocate refrained from considering the prosecutor’s request a victory for the defence. “Ideally, we would like to achieve the acquittal of Abdulmumin Gadjiev,” the advocate noted.

Let us remind you that one of the three judges who pronounced the verdict voiced his dissenting opinion, in which he criticized the grounds for the guilty verdict and in fact acquitted Abdulmumin Gadjiev.
