Human rights defenders explain consequences for Marshenkulova* of being included in list of terrorists and extremists

Zalina Marshenkulova* was involved in human rights activities in Moscow, and therefore she is little known in Kabardino-Balkaria. The inclusion of Zalina Marshenkulova* in the list of terrorists and extremists have significantly limited her rights, including with respect to banking operations and real estate transactions, human rights defenders explained.

A criminal case on justifying terrorism has been instituted against Zalina Marshenkulova*.

“Zalina Marshenkulova* lived and worked in Moscow, and all her human rights cases are related to Moscow, so she is not particularly well known in the republic,” explained human rights defender Valery Khatazhukov.

Zalina Marshenkulova* could have been well known in Kabardino-Balkaria if her activities were related to protecting the rights of local residents, continues the human rights defender.

Being included in the list of terrorists and extremists effectively deprives a person of the opportunity for any financial activity, explains lawyer Yevgeny Smirnov.

“If a person is included in the list of terrorists and extremists, his or her banking accounts are blocked, a withdrawal of more than 10,000 roubles per person is prohibited, and real estate transactions are also prohibited,” Yevgeny Smirnov stated.

Being wanted under the article on extremism may result in detention in many countries around the world, the lawyer notes.

Inclusion in the list of terrorists and extremists leads to significant restrictions. Many countries ignore the fact of a person’s inclusion in the wanted list if they understand that there is a political motive, the lawyer of the “Memorial” Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)** points out.

Let us remind you that Zalina Marshenkulova* lodged an appeal against her arrest in absentia in the case on justifying terrorism, but the Moscow City Court upheld the verdict.

**As reported on the website of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the reason for including on March 1, 2024, the unregistered “Memorial” Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD) into the register of foreign agents was the spread of “inaccurate information aimed at creating a negative image of the Russian Federation, as well as the Russian Armed Forces.”
