Astrakhan Region resident suspected of discrediting Russian Armed Forces

Vitaly Zhuravlyov from the Akhtubinsky District became a suspect in a criminal case on discrediting of the Russian Armed Forces.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in December 2023, in the Akhtubinsky District, a court fined Vitaly Zhuravlyov under the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. The reason was an entry with a photograph of President Putin and criticism of Russians citizens posted by Vitaly Zhuravyov on the “VKontakte” social network.

“Earlier, Vitaly Zhuravlyov had already got an administrative protocol drawn up against him for ‘discrediting the Russian Army.’ In a criminal case, he signed a recognizance not to leave the place which was chosen as a pre-trial restriction measure,” the publication “ASTRA” reports.

Article 280.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was created as a tool for suppressing dissent, the “Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial” human rights project states. “It actually prohibits any criticism of the authorities, which violates the right of citizens to freedom of expression,” the human rights defenders point out.
