Escaped Chechen native Zaurbekova frightened by promise of Kadyrov’s associates to return her to her family

Liya Zaurbekova, a native of Chechnya, who fled the country, asked not to look for her and stated that she feared a forced return to her family, since her escape attracted the attention of Adam Delimkhanov. Liya Zaurbekova had to run away from her family because of physical and psychological violence in the family, human rights defenders emphasized.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Liya Zaurbekova, who fled from her relatives, left the country and is safe, her lawyer said. Russian State Duma member Adam Delimkhanov, a Ramzan Kadyrov’s closest associate, “expressed confidence that Liya Zaurbekova would be returned to her relatives in the nearest future.”

Relatives of 19-year-old Liya Zaurbekova put her on the wanted list and found her in Moscow. On May 16, they surrounded the police department where the girl stayed, but the police promised to ensure her safety. Liya Zaurbekova herself stated that she feared reprisals from her relatives.

“I ask you not to look for me. I’m frightened that Adam Delimkhanov is paying attention to the case. I’m very afraid that they will look for me, find me, and forcefully return me,” Liya Zaurbekova said in a video posted by Ksenia Sobchak’s Telegram channel.

The “Marem” human rights group noted that Liya Zaurbekova is an adult girl who left home of her own free will. “She didn’t leave because of some whim. Liya couldn’t stay where her life was kept under permanent control,” states The “Marem” human rights group in its Telegram channel.
