MPs refuse to provide land plot in Kabardino-Balkaria for memorial to victims of repression

MPs of the Islamey village in the Baksan District refused to provide a plot of land for a memorial to victims of repression. The head of the Kabardino-Balkarian Association of Victims of Political Repression suggests that the above refusal contradicts the law.

Since 1991, Russia marks October 30 as the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression. In Nalchik, activists gather on October 30 at the monument to victims of repression, remembering their relatives repressed during the Stalin’s era and the exile after the deportation of Balkars.

Marx Shakhmurzov, the head of the Kabardino-Balkarian Association of Victims of Political Repression, reports it was Leila Djash, the chair of the Baksan branch of the All-Russian Association of Victims of Political Repression, who proposed installing the monument. The activist also asked the MPs to provide a plot of land. Leila Djash was ready to bear the costs of installing a small stele.

The MPs motivated their refusal by saying that it was inappropriate and unfair to erect a monument in a single locality.

“Then, in our opinion, it is necessary to erect a monument on a regional scale. However, this proposal voiced by Leila Djash was also refused,” Marx Shakhmurzov said.
