Advocate Nemov, beaten in Chechnya, asks to transfer attack case to another region

Advocate Alexander Nemov, who was beaten in Chechnya, requested Alexander Bastrykin, the chair of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), to transfer the case on the attack to another region. The advocate has noted that the attackers threatened to kill him if he returned to Chechnya and that investigators in the republic do not do their best to find the criminals.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Alexander Nemov refused to travel to Chechnya to testify in the case on the attack on him, considering the trip unsafe.

On July 4, in Chechnya, Elena Milashina, a journalist of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, and advocate Alexander Nemov, who visited the republic to attend the trial in Zarema Musaeva’s case, were brutally beaten.

In his motion, Alexander Nemov indicated that during the attack, he and Elena Milashina received death threats if they came to Chechnya again. “Violence dangerous to the life and health of the advocate was used in connection with his participation in court proceedings in Grozny as a defender,” the newspaper “Advokatskaya Gazeta” reported.

Alexander Nemov has noted that identifying those involved in the attack on him was unsuccessful and after almost six months, not a single one of the attackers has been identified.

The advocate has added that the criminal investigation in Chechnya has more “signs of imitation than real action to capture” the persons involved in the attack. Alexander Nemov has expressed his hope that the criminal case will be transferred to another region.
