Activist Larisa Baragunova’s arrest extended

A public prosecutor managed to convince a court of the need to extend the arrest of Tyrnyauz activist Larisa Baragunova, accused of attacking a police officer. Activist’s relatives claim that Larisa Baragunova does not receive the necessary medical treatment in a SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 17, Larisa Baragunova, the head of the “Trade Union ‘Union of the SSR’”* organization, who complained about the search in her apartment, was arrested for two months, after which her arrest was extended.

The court extended Larisa Baragunova’s arrest until January 2024. The public prosecutor suggested that if the pre-trial restriction measure was changed to house arrest, the accused would escape from court.

According to the public prosecutor’s version, the woman caused bodily harm to two police officers when they came to search her apartment.

The relatives of Larisa Baragunova say that the activist suffers from diabetes mellitus and does not receive proper medical treatment at the SIZO, where she has been kept for eight months already. Larisa Baragunova receives medicines for diabetes, but no serious medical care is provided to her. In addition, Larisa Baragunova’s acquaintances reported that the arrested woman suffered an attack of cholelithiasis in the SIZO, as a result of which she lost consciousness and received a head injury.

Larisa Baragunova led the Tyrnyauz branch of the “Trade Union ‘Union of the SSR’”* organization, which was recognized as extremist in Russia and banned by court’s decision.

*In August 2019, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Komi Republic recognized the interregional public association “Union of Rus’ Slavic Forces” (one of the group of movements that also includes “Citizens of the USSR”) as an extremist organization.
