European Parliament demands to release Zarema Musaeva

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning the politically motivated abduction and prosecution of Zarema Musaeva. This document is important not only as a call for Musaeva's liberation, but also as a statement of human rights violations in Chechnya, Abubakar Yangulbaev has noted.

On September 12, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya reduced Zarema Musaeva's prison term down to five years and replaced the general regime colony with a settlement colony. On October 4, Musaeva's son Abubakar Yangulbaev, a lawyer, reported that her advocate had submitted a request for the conditional early relief (CER) for Zarema.

The document of the European Parliament calls on the international community to respond to the alarming situation with human rights in Russia, including Chechnya, Abubakar Yangulbaev has written in his Telegram channel.

The human rights situation in Chechnya remains "catastrophic," the resolution says. Musaeva must be immediately released; and all facts of pressure and attacks on journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders related to Musaeva's case must be investigated, the website of the European Parliament has stated.

Abubakar Yangulbaev has noted that the resolution on Musaeva is a big victory.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that human rights violations in Northern Caucasus were highlighted in the report presented by Mariana Katsarova, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation with human rights in Russia.
