Political analysts treat support for "Wagner" fighters in Rostov-on-Don as low
During the day of Prigozhin's rebellion, the support for fighters of the "Wagner" Private Military Company (PMC) by Rostov-on-Don townspeople was not massive; people came to the city centre more out of curiosity, political analysts believe.
On June 29, Vasily Golubev, the governor of the Rostov Region, treated the videos showing that passers-by in Rostov-on-Don supported PMC fighters as insinuations.
The support for "Wagner" fighters was not universal, says Dmitry Abrosimov, a political analyst and associate professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Socio-Political Sciences of the Southern Federal University.
"I can't say that people supported them. More probable that they just came out to watch," said Bronislav Berkovsky, a political analyst and a board member of the regional branch of the Russian Union of Journalists.
Let us remind you that on June 23, Evgeny Prigozhin accused the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) of shelling the PMC's rear positions and promised to "sort it out." On June 24, armoured personnel carriers (APCs) appeared in central Rostov-on-Don near the headquarters of the Southern Military District. A criminal case was opened against Prigozhin on incitement to armed rebellion. Prigozhin announced that he had taken control of military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, but in the evening of the same day, the "Wagner" PMC fighters left the city. Later it became known that the case against Prigozhin was closed; and he himself arrived in Belarus.
