Five natives of Chechnya denied asylum in Croatia

A court in Croatia has denied international protection to five natives of Chechnya, arguing that they may be Islamic extremists.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 29, 2022, at least 20 natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia, who came from Turkey to Bosnia and Herzegovina to seek political asylum in Croatia, were deported to Istanbul. In January this year, natives of Chechnya told that in Croatia law enforcers beat refugees up and forced them to refuse asylum applications.

On November 7, 2022, it became known that in Croatia, law enforcers detained at least 15 natives of Chechnya who had come from Russia; they were subjected to violence, demanding to refuse asylum requests.

Now, a court in Croatia has denied the status of political refugees and international protection to five natives of Chechnya, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project reports.

According to Isa Daduev, an activist of the "Assembly of European Chechens", the court found, without any sound reason, that the applicants for protection could be Islamic extremists. He has treated the judgement as "very biased."

Now, the natives of Chechnya are in the centre for migrants. Croatian authorities can release them for travelling to some other country, but they can also deport them to Russia.
