Union of Georgian Writers demands resignation of the authorities

On August 21, a spontaneous action was held near the building of the Union of Georgian Writers, which was attended by Georgian writers and poets, public figures and representatives of some opposition parties. The protested - about 200 persons in total - were dissatisfied with the actions of the authorities, under whose decision the Union of Writers had to abandon their building in the Machabeli Street in the centre of Tbilisi.

"Everything what happens is arbitrariness. ...The authorities have moved us out, not waiting for the decision of the court," Makvala Gonashvili, Chairman of the Union of Georgian Writers, declared at the meeting.

Poet Vazha Otarashvili noted in his turn that "this sort of actions against writers are actions against the whole nation, and their name is fascism," the IA "News-Georgia" reports.

"What should we do, when the state encroaches on housing facilities, churches and private property, and on historical monuments? ...They force away buildings and houses. In fact, this is war against own nation. Until absolutely all of us start to resist, the authorities will continue acting this way," Mr Bagaturiya has stated.

The participants of the action have decided to go on with it on August 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the same place at the House of Writers.
