Dagestani resident complains about torture in rehabilitation centre

Elina Umakhanova, who was placed in a rehabilitation centre in Makhachkala at the request of her relatives, complained to the police about the illegal restriction of freedom and torture she was subjected to in the rehabilitation centre.

Two men unknown to Elina Umakhanova kidnapped her and took her to the rehabilitation centre at the request of her parents, who paid for their daughter to be “cured” of bisexuality and atheism, the “SK SOS Crisis Group” reported.

“Elina Umakhanova complained that she was subjected to physical and psychological violence in her family, because of which she ran away from home twice. The first time her relatives returned her with the help of the police ... The police refused to help the girl,” the human rights defenders said.

After her second escape, Elina Umakhanova was taken to the rehabilitation centre in Makhachkala. According to the girl’s complaint, physical violence was used against patients in the rehabilitation centre. In particular, they were handcuffed and were hanging on the railing if they quarrelled with the administrators or the guards.

“You could be beaten, and you could be hanging for days, without food and water ... At most, they could let you go to the toilet, and only a couple of times. The directors said that even if a patient wets his pants, he will continue hanging like that,” the human rights defenders quoted Elina Umakhanova as saying.

Four months later, the 18-year-old girl was taken away by her parents. They locked their daughter at home and took away her mobile phone, because of which she was expelled from the university.

Earlier, Magomed Askhabov, a native of Dagestan, said that he left Russia after he fled from his relatives, who sent him to “be cured” of homosexuality in a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts, where patients were subjected to physical and psychological torture.

Patimat Idrisova also complained about the abduction by her relatives and forced treatment. According to the woman, when she managed to escape, her relatives found her and abducted her. With the help of the human rights defenders, Patimat Idrisova managed to leave the country and change her name.
