Court allows relatives to visit Magamadov and Isaev

With a court’s permission, relatives visited in a SIZO (pre-trial prison) brothers Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev, who were convicted in Chechnya on the charge of providing assistance to a militant. The convicted brothers did not voice complaints about new torture, their advocate said.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 11, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya refused to mitigate the sentence for Salekh Magamadov and his brother Ismail Isaev. The defence intends to appeal against the court’s decision, the “SK SOS” Crisis Group reports.

On December 21, 2021, it was reported that Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev went on a hunger strike due to a court’s refusal to transfer their case to another region. On December 24, the “SK SOS” Crisis Group reported that the health state of Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev had worsened. On January 8, it became known that the brothers had stopped their hunger strike.

Advocate Alexander Nemov said that the brothers were allowed to be visited by their aunts. “The court gave permission to the aunts to visit the brothers in the SIZO … Torture was no longer used after the haircut story,” the advocate reported.

In August 2021, Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev said that warders beat them, demanding to have all their hair cut off.

It was planned to transfer Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev to another penal colony, reported Miron Rozanov, the press secretary of the “SK SOS” Crisis Group.

Let us remind you that on February 22, a court in Chechnya sentenced Salekh Magamadov to eight years, and Ismail Isaev to six years of imprisonment, finding them guilty of providing assistance to a militant from the Aslan Byutukaev’s group.

One of the brothers is gay, and the other is transgender person. They moved from Chechnya to Nizhny Novgorod because of the torture they were subjected to after being detained in April 2020.

The charges against the brothers of providing assistance a militant are ridiculous, since the law enforcement bodies suspected the gay and the transgender person who mocked religion of complicity with a supporter of a radical movement of Islam, noted Elena Milashina, a journalist of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”.
