189 activists detained in Yerevan

In Yerevan, law enforcers detained 189 protesters; after drawing up protocols, they will be released, the police have promised.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 1, opposition activists set up tents in France Square in Yerevan, declaring an endless strike and demanding the resignation of the country's Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan. Today, protesters have blocked 14 streets that resulted in their clashes with law enforcers. The police began detaining activists.

A total of 189 people have been detained for disobeying policemen's lawful orders, Zarzand Gabrielyan, the head of the Media Relations Department of the Police, has informed.

Let us remind you that Armenians' indignation was caused by Mr Pashinyan's statement about the possibility of "lowering the bar" on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. On April 22, he ruled out the signing of documents with Azerbaijan without discussing them with Karabakh residents. However, on the same day, Arthur Vanetsyan, the leader of the "Fatherland" Party, who organized a round-the-clock protest in Yerevan on April 17, announced protesters' disobedience actions with the aim to "dismiss the ruling authorities."

On May 1, opposition supporters organized marches four regions of Armenia to Yerevan where they joined Pashinyan's opponents.
