Georgian parliament adopts amnesty law

On April 11, the Parliament of Georgia approved the law "On Amnesty" in the third final reading. It will affect prisoners who had committed their crimes prior to January 1, 2004. A total of 87 MPs have voted for the bill, the "Georgia-Online" informs.

The amnesty will not affect the persons sentenced to life imprisonment, as well as those convicted for murder, inhuman treatment, terrorism, malfeasance, sexual crimes and crimes against humanity. It also covers the persons who had prepared or attempted to commit crimes. The amnestied persons will be treated as non-convicted.

Besides, the law stipulates the protection of the rights of those prisoners who, due to the coronavirus pandemic, were deprived of relatives' visits – they will be compensated for this. Such prisoners will also have their terms recalculated with account of the pre-trial detention – four days of pre-trial detention will be equal to five days of imprisonment, the "News-Georgia" reports.
