ECtHR takes the side of "Caucasian Knot"

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has satisfied, 12 years later, the complaint lodged by the "Caucasian Knot", having recognized violations in the case on the lawsuit of the administration of the Volgograd Region on libel.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the reason for the financial confrontation that arose between the Volgograd Mayoralty and the administration of the Volgograd Region could be the interests of regional officials and bosses of the "Volzhanin" bus factory. This was stated in the publication of the "Caucasian Knot" dated July 1, 2008, entitled "Serenko: Volgograd Mayoralty and regional administration quarrel over bus factory".

In October 2008, the regional administration filed a defamation lawsuit against the "Caucasian Knot", as it had treated the publication as the one that discredited its business reputation. The Ostankino District Court of Moscow sided with the claimant. The "Caucasian Knot" filed a complaint with the ECtHR about the violation of the right to the freedom of expression.

Finally, the ECtHR has found the complaint of the "Caucasian Knot" as justified and confirmed that there had been a violation of Article 10 "Freedom of Expression" of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The ECtHR did not award material compensation, since the "Caucasian Knot" has not demanded it, says the ECtHR's decision, posted on March 15 in its website.
