USA reacts to arrest of Azerbaijani oppositionist Aliev

The United States have expressed disappointment with the arrest of opposition politician, Ali Aliev, in Azerbaijan on charges of defamation. Washington has called on Azerbaijani authorities to respect their international obligations, including the right to the freedom of expression.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 13, the court ruled to arrest Ali Aliev, the chairman of the oppositional "Citizens and Development" Party in Azerbaijan, for five months under a libel case. Azerbaijani politicians and human rights defenders have condemned the court judgement. They called this case a "political order" and demanded to release the oppositionist.

Washington has reacted to Ali Aliev's arrest. "We are disappointed with the judgement on Ali Aliev's criminal case. We call on the Azerbaijani government to respect its international obligations, including the right to the freedom of expression," the spokesman of the State Department has stated, as quoted today by the Azerbaijani "Turan" News Agency.
