Native of Dagestan stops hunger strike in colony

The Ombudsperson of the Komi Republic and members of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) have visited Khiramagomed Magomedov, a native of Dagestan, who had gone on a hunger strike in protest against his unjustified placement into the dungeon (punishment cell). On February 1, Magomedov was released from the dungeon; and he stopped his hunger strike, Eduard Bushuev, the POC head, has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 25, the above Magomedov, who is serving his sentence in a colony in the Komi Republic on charges of involvement in the "Hizb ut-Tahrir al Islami", an organization banned in Russia, went on a hunger strike demanding to stop the disciplinary sanctions against him on far-fetched grounds. Magomedov, one of the leaders of the NGO "Union of the Just", was found guilty in July 2017 of involvement in the "Hizb ut-Tahrir al Islami", banned in Russia, and sentenced to nine years in a high security colony.

The reason for examining the condition of Khiramagomed Magomedov was the appeal of Igor Golendukhin, the editor of the "Prison Meridian" newspaper, and Igor Sazhin, a former member of the Komi POC, who were approached by the prisoner's relatives, Eduard Bushuev, the POC chairman, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

First of all, POC members were interested in Magomedov's health condition, Mr Bushuev has noted. According to his story, Magomedov feels "normal", "moves on his own", but "is weak because of his hunger strike." On January 31, he was examined by a prison doctor, who stated that there is no threat to his life.

On February 1, Magomedov was released from the dungeon and stopped his hunger strike, Eduard Bushuev has added.
