Court leaves Abdulmumin Gadjiev under arrest for other three months

In Rostov-on-Don, the Southern District Military Court extended until April 28 the arrest of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a journalist of the weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), accused of financing terrorism. The defence pointed out that there were no grounds for extending the journalist’s detention.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a journalist of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik”, as well as Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the “Ansar” charitable foundation, and Kemal Tambiev were detained in a case on financing of terrorism. According to the investigators’ version, Abdulmumin Gadjiev and his alleged accomplices raised 68 million roubles and 200,000 US dollars for terrorists under the pretext of building mosques and helping poor Muslims. Abdulmumin Gadjiev insists he is not guilty.

Today, the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has held the first hearing in the current year in the case against Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov, and Kemal Tambiev. Public prosecutor Murad Aliev filed a motion to extend the pre-trial restriction measure. He said that “the previously chosen pre-trial restriction measure was repeatedly extended and those grounds did not disappear and did not changed” and requested the court to extend the arrest for three defendants in the case for other three months, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent reported from the courtroom.

Anna Serdyukova, an advocated of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, requested the court to dismiss the public prosecutor’s motion. “The public prosecutor did not provide any evidence that my client could abscond from the trial, obstruct the judicial investigation, or put pressure on witnesses in any way,” the advocate said. Anna Serdyukova has also added that the case has been pending for more than a year and that the defendants have been separated from their families.

However, the court extended the arrests of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Kemal Tambiev, and Abubakar Rizvanov until April 28.
