Magamadov and Isaev feel worse during hunger strike

On the fourth day of their hunger strike in a SIZO (pre-trial prison), brothers Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev look exhausted, but they intend to continue their protest against the court’s refusal to send their case to a court outside Chechnya, employees of the “SK SOS” Crisis Group report.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 21, it became known that Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev went on a hunger strike because of the refusal of the Achkhoi-Martan District Court to transfer their case to another region. Earlier, advocates have filed a motion to send the case to a court in another region, since they do not hope for an unbiased consideration in Chechnya.

At the beginning of February, law enforcers took out from Nizhny Novgorod 20-year-old Salekh Magamadov and his brother Ismail, who was a minor at that time. In the absence of advocates and parents of the young men, the court ruled to detain them. In March 2021, the brothers complained to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) about beatings and torture.

The brothers are accused of aiding and abetting a militant from the criminal grouping led by Aslan Byutukaev. According to the investigators’ version, the suspects delivered to the militant bread, juice, tea, and chocolate.

The brothers’ condition worsened after the start of their hunger strike. Today, on December 24, their health “leaves much to be desired,” an employee of the “SK SOS” Crisis Group has told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent. The activist preferred to remain anonymous. “The brothers are very depressed and exhausted, but they continue their hunger strike. They are determined, and they will not end their protest in the nearest future,” the activist said.
