Georgia's Ombudsperson reports situation improvement in Saint Nino orphanage under social workers' control

The situation with the observance of the rights of pupils of the boarding school for orphans in the town of Ninotsminda has improved significantly after a social workers' round-the-clock watch was organized there, Nino Lomdjariya, the Georgia's Ombudsperson, has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after Ms Lomdjariya's complaints that her staff was not allowed examining the above boarding orphanage, employees of the state agency for the regulation of medical activities managed to get there. Some of the pupils stated that they wouldn't stay in the boarding school – and they were taken out. The new principal initiated a staff replacement and announced a reform plan. On June 28, employees of the Ombudsperson's office received access to the territory of the boarding school, where they talked to pupils and began studying documents.

Now, the boarding school hosts 17 minor pupils, 15 of whom live there, says the report of Nino Lomdjariya, the Georgia's Ombudsperson, a copy of which is at the disposal of the "Caucasian Knot".

Social workers are at the boarding school around the clock and ensure that the pupils are provided with everything they need.

The Ombudsperson has also asked to assess the psychological state of all the former pupils of the boarding school. "For several years, pupils there were subjected to inhuman and humiliating treatment, which can be equated to torture. Now, the situation has really improved," Nino Lomdjariya has concluded.
